The Magic of Mosaic Knitting (Video Tutorial)

Earlier this week, we shared the alternating cable cast on that provides the perfect start for Marceline Smith’s Terrain Mitts. Once you’ve knitted that ribbed cuff, it’s time for the main event … ever-so-clever mosaic knitting that gives the mitt’s body its distinctive pattern.

With mosaic knitting, you are able to achieve beautiful colourwork patterns, no stranding, no floats … the ‘hardest’ thing you’ll need to do is carry your yarns up the inside of your mitt. It all comes down to some simple slip stitches. In this video tutorial, Jen will show you how to work mosaic knitting in the round, and then how to work it flat when you come to divide the mitt for the thumb. If you’re reading on our email service, this link will take you straight to the YouTube video tutorial.

Ever so simple and ever so stunning!

We just love the Terrain Mitts — perfect for your own autumn accessorising, and an equally perfect gift too! Marce’s sample pair show off the shining natural shades of J&S Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight — you’ll need 1 x 50g ball each of three shades. This pattern also works perfectly with J&S 2ply Jumper Weight … you’ll need up to 2 x 25g balls in three colours. Alternatively, we’ve still got some Autumn Kits in stock with yarn for all three autumn patterns!

And of course, if you’ve not yet got the pattern for the Terrain Mitts, you’ll find it in Confident Knitting. It’s one of twelve patterns, each of which teach you twelve techniques to make you a more confident knitter! Each pattern is accompanied by in-depth photo tutorials and further supported by videos on our YouTube channel.
