Have you ever wondered why we ask you to use a hashtag on your posts on Instagram? Using a hashtag makes it easy for other people to find posts that interest them. We use hashtags on our Instagram posts so that other people can find us.

You may already know this, but did you also know that you can follow a hashtag? This works in the same way as following a person (or business) on Instagram. When you follow a hashtag you will see a selection of posts from that hashtag in your feed, alongside posts from accounts you follow. This is lots of fun when you are working on a knitalong as it means you can see how other people are getting on, even if you don’t follow them. You can then like and comment on their posts, and who doesn’t like getting encouraging comments on their posts?! You won’t see posts by people with private accounts, unless you follow them.

If the hashtag you follow is very busy, then you won’t see all the posts, but a selection. As with everything on Instagram, the more you interact with those hashtag posts (or people you follow), the more of them Instagram will show you.

It’s also worth knowing that as we have a lot of followers, we don’t always see posts where we are mentioned in the comments or in the post caption. Instagram doesn’t always include them in our notifications and we have no way to search for them. If you want to be sure of us seeing your post, there are two options: Use a hashtag for the book you are working from, or alternatively, and this is most effective, tag us in the photo itself.
